King have a dedicated and hardcore fanbase who love their products and who King love to treat. To coincide with King’s Halloween promotions, they wanted to run a promotional ‘character creator’ game accessible via their app which only permitted users could play and create their own character from pre-defined parts (in this case a ghost) and share it on social media and the site’s own gallery.
The character-creator microsite had to run like an in-app game. We spent productive time working with their internal game developers to ensure it would integrate fluidly with the game app, as well as creating a prototype to test the functions before moving onto the build.
We chose to integrate the King CMS into the WebApp to manage the character’s individual items (Body, glasses, mouth etc.) and overall settings of the application so that it could be easily replicated for other instances of the same application. So we extended the campaign manager built for another King promotion, and even added the ability to ratify the users against legitimate participants, completely manageable by King.
Our developers then created cloud functions to optimise the character images, so that when the user created their own character, the combination of assets was only stored as a reference to the pre-existing assets (ie. not duplicated) and then simply combined to create the ‘baked’ version (ie. the compressed, single version) ensuring an incredibly fast experience and manageable database from which the user could share their creation on social media and the gallery.
The success of the campaign and the reception from King themselves has led to this being rolled out for further platforms, and therefore is another quality project for the Biff devs to be proud of!!
