The RNOH (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital) approached us to create an online tool which would provide patients with a very simple, clear, and easy-to-understand guide to their visit to the Hospital. The site should include friendly and informative video content and imagery, which can be viewed on all devices.
We spent a great deal of time initially researching what information patients would require to prepare them for their visit to the RNOH. Once this had been identified, we tried to keep the written content to a minimum and focus on delivering as much information as possible in short, easy-to-digest video guides.
The navigation had to be very simple and focused around making it as straightforward as possible for prospective patients to find the area of service for which they would be visiting the hospital. Each of the top level sections had a short, informative video as an introduction to that particular area, created by award-winning film director Jan Letocha. Where possible it was decided to use members of RNOH hospital staff to ‘front’ each video to give them a more personal feel and make the patient feel more relaxed about their visit.
For the Special Services section, which represented the areas of expertise for which the Hospital is renowned around the world, we wanted to give this a unique and special visual identity so we commissioned a 3D render of the human body and used it for the homepage and also the sections sub navigation by highlighting areas on the body when buttons are interacted with.
We created a template, which each Specialist Service would follow, so that patients would be familiar with the format of the content when visiting multiple sections. We kept the written content to a minimum and tried to focus the content in areas which would be of most use to the patient. A key feature which we developed in conjunction with the hospital was ‘The Journey’: a timeline of events which a patient can expect when they visit the hospital for treatment, broken down into ‘Admission’, ‘During your stay’ and ‘Discharge’. We also created accompanying patient journey videos for each service.
The patient guide website has been incredibly well received by patients & staff and was recently nominated in the ‘Improving Care with Technology’ category at the extremely prestigious Health Service Journal awards.
